Tesla electric car
1,000 free electric car charging points will be installed across the UK by eco-charity Zero Carbon World by the end of June, 2012. That's the promise made by electric car owner and charity founder, Kevin Sharpe.
"There are no restrictions to use our network. You don't need to be a member, subscribe, pay in advance or use a smart card to access electricity", says Sharpe.
The WallPod charging stations are being installed at hotels, restaurants and with other local businesses. So far, the charity has installed 62 charging points and says they remain on target to install 1,000 free charging points by the end of June 2012.
1000 Free Charging Points - Charging Event
The latest charging points to go live are at The Moat House Hotel in Stafford. "We want to reduce our carbon footprint and have already received a silver award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme", says hotel manager Chris Lewis. "This is all part of our wider commitment to encourage growth in the electric vehicle community and promote action among local authorities."
To celebrate the opening of the latest charging points, Zero Carbon World and The Moat House hotel are hosting an electric vehicle charging event on Friday 9th December. A host of industry representatives will be bringing electric vehicles and charging them at the new facilities and members of the public are invited to come and see the cars, talk to owners and see exactly how electric vehicles are being used today.
On show will be the newly launched Renault Kangoo EV, the Tesla Roadster sports car and a sneak preview of the TATA Indica Vista EV ahead of its official UK launch.
"We are extremely proud to be creating the UK's only Open Charging Station Network", says Sharpe. "Wherever electric vehicle drivers are, they can recharge while eating, sleeping, working or simply relaxing."
