G-Wiz passed MOT

27th July 2010 - Our Reva G-Wiz passed MOT first time. Our G-Wiz electric car has not been used much this year and it has got old batteries in it, some of which were second hand. We took it out at the end of last week to see if we had enough range to get the car to the garage which is 5 miles away. On our first run in the car we managed 10 miles using only half the charge.

While I was driving we had the laptop connected to the serial port of the G-Wiz running the Battery Monitor Software to analyse the batteries. Two of the batteries were showing an amber light, which means they are weaker than the others, but the rest of the set of batteries all stayed green and seem to be holding out well.

We then drove the car for the next couple of days and managed to get 14 miles out of it with the battery indicator still in the green zone. We knew that we would have no problems getting the car to the garage and back again.

The G-Wiz was booked in for 10 am, so we dropped it off at 9am on the way to work. We received a phone call at 10.30 to say that it had passed first time. This is good news as some G-Wiz’s including our own last year can have problems with the brakes. Due to the use of regenerative braking the bakes are not used as much as a normal car and the brakes can seize.

The car is now safely back at home ready to be taken out again.
